Yati has created a bag made out of plastic through the art of knitting. She was the belle of the ball at the 2007 Earth Day Trash'n Fashion Show.

Yati, after much hmming and hawing, has decided on the paint color for one room. The other three eagerly await a decision.

I have started painting a portrait of our dog. So far, I am about one-third finished with the background. It looks awesome.

Yati got a new truck. Its name is Tacoma. I think that means, "Sacred Mountain." Perhaps someone out there can verify this shaky fact.

We sold our toilet for fifty bucks. Don't worry, it's not the only one we have.

Yati is painting a picture of a cycad. Don't worry, GMAK, we won't eat it.

We may have a brief interruption in our internet service during our move. So don't panic if I can't blog for a few days. I'm okay. It's just because we don't have internet service.

In an attempt to secure a second income, I have become something best known as the Easter Bunny. Spreading the miracle of spring throughout our community has its ups and downs.

In Memorium [Aug. 6th, 2006|12:31 pm]
This week was filled with ups and downs. First, the bad news:

Our most majestic guppy passed away. This represents one third of our guppy ranch.

Lily, also known as the worst dog ever, urinated on the bed and my leg while I was sleeping. It has caused us to be kinder to her since we couldn't be meaner without killing her. She ran away too. Sadly, we found her. Okay, so we were glad. But I'm not sure why.

One of our beloved Java Finches passed away. We suspect that it was due to stressed caused by the evil green parakeet. This represents one-half of our Java Finch ranch.

Last night there was a tropical storm. I had to go in to work since weather can cause possible threats to the creatures I'm paid to keep from dying. After reading above, would you pay me?

Anyone that has met Yati probably knows that she doesn't like to shop. Since the dog chewed up her shoes, I went and bought her new ones. She didn't like them. So I took them back.

Yati had an interview on Thursday. She didn't know where it was to be held so Wednesday night night we drove around looking for it. It was very dark and rainy.

Upon our return home, the dog ran away.

Some good news:

Two-thirds of our guppy ranch is intact.

In spite of the storm, our orchid is sprouting a new flower stalk.

During the storm, three endangered birds were hatched. And they're still alive (knock on wood).

A shipment of budgie nesting boxes has arrived at the pet store. Yipee!

We had a lovely dinner party on Thursday with a co-worker of mine who is from the Seattle area. It was fun to think about Tukwila again.

That same night, we had the largest crop ever of tomatoes.

Best of all, Yati was offered the position of grant writer at the Guam Salvation Army. She is very pleased with the organization and the interviewers. It seems to be an excellent fit. The perfect balance between fun and challenge. Who would have thought that Yati would ever join an army?

I’m not sure where to start since nothing happened this week.

Yati and I hung some pictures in the bathroom. I’m pleased with the result, but one seems like it is going to fall.

Some Jehovah’s Witnesses came to call while I was at work.

On Friday the dog peed on Yati’s painting. She painted over it, and I can’t even see where it was. I am constantly amazed at the dog’s ability to make poor choices and Yati’s ability to cope with a frontier lifestyle. I have married a closet rancher.

We celebrated Friday’s event by going to our favorite coffee shop that evening. The owner is nice and they have great live music. My fun was slightly compromised, however, since there was no ukulele and they didn’t play my favorite song.

On a more positive note, we went snorkeling, and I witnessed some of the best diving I have ever seen. Yati took pictures and I simply enjoyed.

We made sushi yesterday. It was more like a craft project than cooking. I had a great time, even though I don’t like crafts or cooking. It must have been my lust for Asian cultures that piqued my interest.

I learned that I will be going to Rota for two weeks in September to trap, shoot, and gut feral cats. If that’s not a treat, I don’t know what is. I have never shot a gun before---it is a little intimidating.

I potted a palm tree. Yati says the dog has dug holes in it though.

Spam is creeping its way into becoming a staple. For those of you who spend too much time around computers, I’m talking about real spam.

My hopes for today include a movie, snorkeling, and an always eagerly anticipated trip to a pet store. Two out of three will be a coup.

Dear Diary,
It's rainy season, which means toads get hit by cars.
It's also difficult to go snorkeling because it seems like snorkeling in the rain would be sad. It would not, however, be cold. But the sadness wins out again.
Yati and I went to the Liberation Day Parade in our pseudo-nation's capitol, Hagatna. That word is pronounced in many different ways.
It was rainy and we took the dog and sat in the gutter. Within ten minutes, I was covered in mud. The type that's in the gutter. The parade seemed nice, but it moved slowly and only really included adults with guns and children with guns. The people of Guam are very eager to do whatever it takes to protect their freedom, it seems. There are even elementary-aged children involved in pre-military groups. We think that Lily made it on TV.
I had a four-day weekend.
Yati and I went to a Vietnamese restaurant called Lumpia House. I thought the word lumpia was a type of fish or a disease, but I think it is food.
Yati and I had a big scare. (No, it's not what you're thinking, GMAK.) Our computer wouldn't turn on. This was devastating. It is our only link to reality. Without our computer, we would lose everything that is human. Luckily, Yati took it apart and put it back together through the direction of Pshort and S0ckm0nk3y. I was impressed. The union of GMAK and AV8 has created a truly amazing troop of computer-fixers.
Our baby guppies are doing fine.
Yati's business is off and running. We took some prints to a consignment store. If they sell, we will have made hardly any money. If they don't, heartache. Agony of defeat.
During the day that our computer didn't work, I panicked and bought a television and dvd player. TV on Guam is terrible. There are only two commercials that they play over and over (Reggae Dance Party and Terror Dome-Mixed Martial Arts aka cage fighting). If I could only have two commercials, I would choose any other two.
We did laundry but I don't have any clothes to show for it, because I stupidly was wearing my best shorts for the event and then my other shorts got muddy at the parade the very next day. Tomorrow I will only wear a shirt to work.
Yati is angry because our welcome mat has mold growing on it. I put it on the dry side of the house and tried to soothe her.
Due to our extreme small-scale agricultural successes, (guppies and cherry tomatoes) I have suggested to Yati that we go public. I feel our home is on the verge of becoming a fish ranch. Yati feels otherwise.
One last thing. Yati has been painting a mural for our living room. It includes the colors of light green and green. I feel that it will nicely compliment the fish ranch.

It's been so long [Jul. 16th, 2006|06:33 pm]
Sorry it's been so long. It's difficult for me to keep up. No excuse.

Highlights of my week included:
- I spent three days at a training to prepare me for Weapons of Mass Destruction through the infection of cattle. It was every bit as ridiculous as it sounds, but there was a big buffet (they only served beef on the last day).

- Saturday Yati and I went to a fishing derby for work. It rained. We watched an eight-year-old Chuukese girl haul in a meter-long crocodile fish. It was spectacular, and it warmed my heart.

- Yati and I are going into business together. We are having business cards made. I'm sure it comes as no surprise that we are having a difficult time picking the design for the cards, since we're both so picky.

- I thought today the dog urinated on the futon, but it turned out that she had just licked it wet. Who wants to come visit us?!

- Wednesday, possibly inspired by Pshort, Yati and I (actually mostly Yati) made pizzas. Yati even made the sauce from scratch. It was lots of fun, but the dough was a little dense. Any suggestions?

- Yati and I have been scouring the flea market, yard sales, and import stores for plants and pots to transform our yard into a tropical paradise.

- A rail was born this morning. That surprised me since his parents had only been together a day before they laid the eggs. Yati and I have been together far longer, and still, nothing.

- Our guppies had babies last weekend. I didn't want to say anything yet since they were so fragile and tiny, but now they seem full of vigor.

- The best thing of all this week was Friday night. Yati and I ate at a wonderful Japanese restaurant overlooking the Philippine Sea. It was quite a feast. I wish you all could have been there to experience the magic.

Tomorrow is buffet night at Pizza Hut. Yippee!

Yesterday Guam encountered a tropical stormfront that was leftover from a typhoon on other islands. It was nothing to write home about, but I am anyway. The winds were gusty and it rained very heavily. Water came into our house through both of our doors. Our tarp was slightly ripped and the bungee-cord-thingies broke. Yati is still alive, don't worry. We didn't have to make that choice. Other things concerning me at the moment include:

Yati and I went to church and it was terrible, we are considering other options.

Lily likes to lick Yati's armpits. She's not concerned about which one and she can come at it from any angle.

Last night I took some pictures of toads that were trying to reproduce. I'm not sure if they considered the flash mood lighting. My guess is no.

Yati felt yuck today. I think it was due to some corn soup with egg floaties she had at a yucky place we eat at after church. Yati likes it because they have bacon and eggs, and I like it because they serve foods with lots of MSG.

Yati wore a beautiful new blouse with her pearls to church today. As surreal as this sentance sounds, it is true. And she was a vision.

Perhaps I will now bake a cake. For those of you that don't know, the vast majority of cakes I make are of the style of the Japanese flag. I hope we have raspberry jam!

Today I saw a place called Rota. I could see it because I was on the air force base on the northern tip of the island. Rota is another island in the Marianas archipelago, belonging to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. My boss is there right now, but I couldn't see her from where I was. I also saw some black francolins. They are an introduced species for hunting. When I lived in the U.S. I almost got them as a pet. Also on my trip to the base, I went to the explosive storage facilities and saw bombs. I thought of AV8 when many different types of fighter jets flew by, all of which I could not identify. Yati and I went to a Chinese restaurant we read about in the newspaper. The portions were small but the food was good. For those of you who haven't had it yet, the fifth of July is pretty fun. Stay cool.

Yo.
It sounds like everyone is doing well. I'm glad to hear it. Yati and I are going to a BBQ with a Filipino church group and a troop of roving Canadians for a celebration of our nation's independence from England. The event is storied to be located in a prime firework-viewing place, that the peeps of Guam call "Piti."
Our dog seems a little smarter every week. She has decreased the behavior of licking the air and begun chewing on the corner of her favorite concrete block instead.
On Saturday Yati and I entered the exciting world of water gardening. We are starting small. So far it has been pretty worth it.
Last night I had a dream that I got a ruby ring and s0ckm0nk3y got a huge tank with lots of herps in it. Both sound nice, but I was a little jealous.
Yati has not been able to find eggs in stores that are not less than a month past the expiration date. We are considering opening our home to fowl as an alternative to eating rotten eggs. I guess I'm ok with this since I love chickens. I confess..it was my idea.
Seeya (actually, no I won't)

hey sm. here is a pic of a Java finch/Java sparrow/Java rice finch. I think their common name is derived from their place of origin, but they can be found in other parts of Indonesia today--and there are at least two in Guam.
